KAMJONG, October 10, 2026: Tensions continued to escalate in Kamjong district following a night of violence in Chassad, with police sources reporting that a total of 24 houses had been burnt so far. The unfolding situation has also been marked by reports of three Kuki deaths in Kamjong and the killing of a Naga civilian in Ningjou village, further deepening concerns over civilian safety and the potential for wider violence.

According to police sources, the incident in Chassad began at around 9:30 pm on Friday after security personnel received information about the movement of armed persons near the local cemetery. Personnel from the police, Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) and Border Security Force (BSF), stationed in the area, proceeded to verify the information.
As the security personnel approached the cemetery, they reportedly came under fire from armed persons allegedly hiding in the area. The forces responded with blank firing and, upon reaching the location from where the shots had originated, found that the suspected armed individuals had fled under the cover of darkness.
The security personnel subsequently found a man lying on the ground, who was identified as the pastor of Chassad Kuki village. They also discovered bunkers and trenches dug around the cemetery, raising concerns over the presence of fortified positions in the area.
The situation reportedly intensified when a group of Chassad Kuki villagers marched towards the primary school where IRB personnel were stationed. Police said the security forces warned the gathering not to advance towards the school. When the group allegedly refused to comply, the personnel resorted to blank firing to disperse them. A woman was reportedly injured during the incident.
Amid the confrontation, houses belonging to both communities were reportedly set ablaze. According to the latest information from police sources, the total number of houses burnt had reached 24. Reports indicated that 12 houses belonging to the Naga community were among those affected, including the residence of the Raizan Katamnao Long President. Around 10 houses belonging to the Kuki community were also reportedly set on fire on Saturday morning.
The circumstances surrounding the destruction of the houses, including allegations of deliberate targeting and retaliatory arson, remain to be independently established.
In a separate development, police sources reported that three Kuki persons had died in Kamjong. Further details regarding the circumstances and locations of these deaths were not immediately available.
Meanwhile, a civilian identified as Ngachanso Ningshen, 30, Son of Rachel Ningshen and Timothy Ningshen from Ningjou village, was reportedly killed after suspected Kuki militants opened fire in the area. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the motive and identities of those responsible, require further verification.
The reported deaths and destruction of residential properties have heightened fears among residents as tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities continue to rise. The incidents have also raised urgent concerns about the protection of civilians and the possibility of further retaliatory violence.
Police said the situation remains volatile and sensitive, with security forces monitoring developments.
With the reported death toll and number of burnt houses continuing to raise alarm, preventing further violence, establishing the facts surrounding the incidents and ensuring the safety of residents remain urgent priorities.
