UKHRUL, August 18: The Sihai Khunou Public Council has expressed strong outrage over what it described as police inaction and delay in the investigation of an alleged broad-daylight attempted murder incident at Shai Khunou Village.

In a statement issued during a press conference held on Tuesday, at Ukhrul Press Club, the council alleged that the incident occurred on May 12, 2026, at around 12:15 pm, when a group of accused persons allegedly attacked victims without provocation during the MGNREGS election process.
According to the council, the attackers were allegedly armed with dangerous weapons, including sharp stones and wooden bars, and assaulted the victims, causing grievous injuries and lacerated wounds to the head and other parts of the body.
The council further alleged that the assailants chased the victims to their residence and demanded that they be brought out, describing the incident as a deliberate attempt to cause serious harm.
The statement also accused Mr. Khungshan Shimray of allegedly inciting the attackers during the incident. The council claimed that threatening and provocative remarks were made during the assault, further intensifying the situation.
The Sihai Khunou Public Council said the victims continue to suffer from physical and psychological trauma and remain under fear due to alleged threats following the incident.
The council stated that a complaint was initially recorded under GD No. 15/UKL-PS/2026 dated May 12, 2026, while an FIR, No. 06(06)2026 UKL-PS, under the sections cited in its representation, was allegedly registered only on June 7, 2026.
Expressing concern over the alleged delay, the council questioned why immediate legal action was not taken despite the seriousness of the complaint. It alleged that the accused persons were allowed to remain at large, raising concerns over the safety of the victims and the integrity of the investigation.
The council has therefore placed two major demands before the authorities.
First, it demanded the swift apprehension and strict prosecution of every person involved in the alleged attempted murder, irrespective of their status or influence.
Second, it called for a formal and rigorous internal investigation into the alleged delay and handling of the case by the concerned police officials, stressing that justice must not be compromised by administrative inaction.
The council appealed to the competent authorities to ensure a fair, impartial and time-bound investigation and to protect the fundamental rights and security of the victims.
The Sihai Khunou Public Council maintained that justice delayed is justice denied, and urged the authorities to act promptly to restore public confidence in the rule of law.
The allegations above are based on the representation issued by the Sihai Khunou Public Council. The claims remain allegations unless established through investigation or judicial proceedings.
