38 Houses Reportedly Burnt in Attacks on Liangmai Naga Villages in Kangpokpi

Makui Village Authority condemns early-morning attack; TNL alleges coordinated assault by Kuki armed groups

September 1, 2026: At least 38 residential houses in two Liangmai Naga villages under Kangpokpi district were reportedly burnt down in separate incidents in the early hours of Tuesday, with local authorities alleging that armed Kuki militants were responsible for the attacks.

According to a press condemnation issued by the Makui Village Authority, armed militants allegedly attacked Pipuram Naga Village at around 4 a.m., opening fire before setting houses and properties ablaze. The authority stated that household belongings, food grains and other properties were destroyed in the incident.

The statement further alleged that after attacking Pipuram, the armed men proceeded towards Makui Naga Village, where firing reportedly continued towards the main village. According to the village authority, the attackers attempted to set houses on fire and cause large-scale casualties.

The Makui Village Authority described the incident as a continuation of violence in the area, referring to the August 27 killing of four Makui villagers, whom it alleged were killed in a pre-planned ambush between Makui Ashang and Thanamba villages.

Meanwhile, a separate communiqué issued by the Media Cell of the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) alleged that as many as 38 houses in Makui Piporam and Tapon villages were completely burnt during coordinated attacks.

The TNL alleged that cadres belonging to the Kuki National Front–Presidential (KNF-P) and Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) were involved in the attacks and identified Jangboi Kipgen as one of the alleged leaders. The organisation also claimed that Luithuibou Newmai, pastor of Tapon village church, was shot and critically injured, while four private vehicles were reportedly destroyed.

The TNL further alleged that the attacks were part of a continuing pattern of violence against Liangmai Naga settlements in the Kangpokpi area and accused the armed groups of attempting to displace villagers from their ancestral lands.

Both statements strongly condemned the reported attacks and called for stronger government intervention to protect civilians and prevent further violence.

The TNL also appealed for greater solidarity among Naga communities across territorial boundaries, urging them to collectively safeguard their land, identity and people.
