Ukhrul, September 21, 2026: The Tangkhul Naga Awunga Long (TNAL), the apex body of the Tangkhul Naga Headman’s Association, has expressed deep concern and strong dismay over a recent incident involving the hunting and consumption of a pangolin within the Tangkhul Naga jurisdiction.
In a public notice, the TNAL recalled its binding resolution adopted unanimously on July 25, 2024, which prohibits the hunting, killing, capturing, possession, consumption and trade of pangolins within the Tangkhul jurisdiction.
The organisation said the resolution reflects the collective commitment of the Tangkhul Naga community towards wildlife protection, preservation of natural heritage and safeguarding the dignity of customary institutions.
Condemning the recent incident as contrary to the spirit and intent of the community resolution, the TNAL appealed to every Tangkhul Naga individual, household, Village Authority and community institution to strictly uphold and implement the resolution.
The TNAL called upon community members to refrain from hunting, killing, capturing, possessing, consuming or trading pangolins and any products derived from them. It also urged communities to discourage practices, beliefs or activities that could promote the exploitation of pangolins.
The organisation further directed that any incident involving the hunting, trapping, possession, consumption or trafficking of pangolins should be immediately reported to the concerned Village Authority, Forest Department or appropriate law-enforcement authority.
Highlighting the ecological importance of pangolins, the TNAL stated that the species forms an important part of the forest ecosystem and is protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. It stressed that protecting pangolins is not merely a matter of statutory law but also a collective customary responsibility of the community.
“As custodians of our land and natural heritage,” the TNAL said, the community has a responsibility to preserve living resources and pass them safely to future generations.
The TNAL President, Kashiung Tennyson, made a solemn appeal to every Tangkhul household, Village Authority, customary institution and community member to stand united in protecting pangolins and other wildlife and to uphold the spirit and sanctity of the July 25, 2024 resolution.
The notice concluded with a reminder that customary resolutions represent the collective voice of the community and that their observance is a shared responsibility.
