Imphal, June 17: Security forces have stepped up coordinated operations across several fringe and vulnerable areas of Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Thoubal districts amid escalating incidents of violence and armed activities in the state.
The intensified operations are being carried out under the direct supervision of Mukesh Singh, who is closely monitoring the security situation in districts that have witnessed a rise in killings and armed confrontations in recent weeks.
Sources said combined teams of state and central security forces have launched extensive cordon-and-search operations and area domination exercises in multiple sensitive pockets. As part of the tightened security arrangement, additional checkpoints and nakas have been set up at strategic points to regulate movement and prevent any untoward incidents.
Officials stated that large-scale combing operations are also underway, during which arms and ammunition have reportedly been recovered from different locations.
In one of the major operations, security personnel carried out a massive search at Konsakhul (Konsaram) village in Kangpokpi district during the early hours of Wednesday. According to local sources, over 60 security vehicles arrived in and around the village at around 5 a.m., followed by a large-scale search involving more than 150 personnel.
During the operation, three village volunteers were reportedly taken into custody for questioning. They were identified as Chalanwangbo Thiumai, Hopeson Abonmai, and Namroungwi Chawang.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation in Henglep Sub-Division under Churachandpur district, a man identified as Lenminsang was reportedly killed during a security action at North Songkong village.
The incident has triggered strong reactions, with Henglep MLA Letzamang Haokip expressing shock over the death. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the legislator termed the incident deeply disturbing and said the death of a civilian under such circumstances raises serious concerns over the conduct of security operations and could erode public trust in the security apparatus.
Authorities have yet to release an official detailed statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the reported killing.
