Ukhrul, Aug. 3: The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), along with its frontal organisations under the aegis of the United Naga Council (UNC), on Monday observed the 11th Anniversary of the signing of the Indo-Naga Framework Agreement at Ukhrul Town Hall with a renewed appeal to the Government of India to honour and implement the historic agreement in letter and spirit at the earliest.
The programme brought together leaders of various Tangkhul apex bodies, civil society organisations, church leaders and members of the public in a collective reaffirmation of support for the Framework Agreement signed on August 3, 2015, between the Government of India and the NSCN.
The observance commenced with an opening hymn by KKL-67, followed by an invocation offered by Rev. Mayongsing Ngalung, Pastor of Viewland Baptist Church, Phungreitang. Ringphapam Kasar, President (In-charge) of TMNL, moderated the programme.
Delivering the keynote address, TNAL President Kashung Tennyson stressed that the Framework Agreement represents the political aspiration and historical rights of the Naga people and urged the Government of India to demonstrate sincerity by bringing the prolonged peace process to its logical conclusion.
TSL President Thingreiphi Lungharwoshi delivered the message from the Yaruwo, while Yursari Kasomwoshi presented a special number. TNL President Sword Vashum also addressed the gathering, reiterating the need for an honourable and acceptable political settlement based on the Framework Agreement.
During the programme, TKS President Ramreichan Keishing led the public in raising slogans calling for an early solution to the Indo-Naga political issue. The slogans echoed across the venue with the crowd responding, “Early Solution,” “Framework Agreement,” “No More Bloodshed,” and “Combing Operation is Not the Solution,” while also condemning militarisation and proxy wars.
A public declaration, signed by the presidents of TNL, TNAL, TSL, TKS and TMNL, was also released during the event.
The declaration stated that the Nagas of the undivided Ukhrul district “honour and fully support the Framework Agreement” and asserted that it is the fervent wish of the Naga people that the agreement be implemented “in letter and spirit for an honourable and acceptable solution at the earliest.”
Recalling that eleven years have passed since the signing of the agreement, the declaration said the continued delay in reaching a final settlement has become “a dishonour and disrespect to our historical and political rights as a people.”
It further appealed to the Government of India to exercise the necessary political will and sincerity to give effect to the principles mutually agreed upon in the Framework Agreement, stating that its implementation would pave the way for peace and harmonious coexistence.
The programme concluded with a benediction pronounced by Rev. Barnabas Ramror, Pastor of Viewland SDA Church.
The observance ended with a strong and unified message from the gathering, urging New Delhi to expedite the implementation of the Indo-Naga Framework Agreement and bring the long-pending Naga political issue to a just, honourable and lasting resolution.
