Imphal, May 31: A villager sustained serious injuries while another remains missing following a suspected militant ambush near the Tagiuky River in Konsakhul Village on Sunday morning. The Konsakhul Village Authority has strongly condemned the attack, alleging that armed cadres of the KNF(P), in collaboration with residents of Leilon Vaiphei Village, were responsible.
According to sources, the incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. when three villagers from Konsakhul went to inspect a damaged water pipeline supplying water to the village. As they approached the site near the river, armed militants reportedly opened fire on them.
In the attack, Kachiaklung Chawang (24), son of Parachamdin Chawang of Konsakhul Village, sustained a bullet injury to his right hand. He, along with another villager identified as Manonbou Abonmei (19), son of Paramthonang Abonmei, managed to escape. Abonmei reportedly suffered a back injury after rolling down a hillside while fleeing from the attackers.
However, Paonganlakbou Lunglemang (54), who had accompanied the two youths, failed to return and remains unaccounted for. Search efforts are reportedly underway amid growing concern for his safety.
Condemning the incident, the Konsakhul Village Authority described the attack as “barbaric and inhumane.” The Authority alleged that the assault was preceded by the deliberate disruption of the village’s water supply and stated that the attack was carried out without any provocation from the villagers.
The Authority further pointed out that the incident occurred on a Sunday, a day observed by Christians for worship, and termed the attack a grave violation of human rights and Christian values.
The statement also recalled the alleged abduction of 18 Naga civilians by KNF(P) militants and residents of Leilon Vaiphei Village in an earlier incident, claiming that six of those abducted are still missing. According to the Authority, the latest attack has further heightened fear and insecurity among the people of Konsakhul.
Following the incident, Kachiaklung Chawang was provided first aid at the Army camp in Leimakhong before being shifted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Sources said that seven to eight Army vehicles rushed to the area after the attack, and security forces have intensified their presence in the vicinity.
The Konsakhul Village Authority has urged the Government and security agencies to take immediate measures to ensure the safety of villagers, restore essential services, and conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. It has also appealed to civil society organisations and human rights bodies to intervene and help safeguard the rights and security of the people of Konsakhul.
