Imphal, June 17: A tense standoff at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, finally eased late Tuesday night after three injured Kuki youths were shifted from the hospital to Churachandpur Medical College under heavy security.
The youths, who were admitted to RIMS on June 15 after being injured in an exchange of fire at Leilon Vaiphei village, had become the centre of controversy, triggering protests and creating an atmosphere of unrest within the hospital premises.
Eyewitnesses said security personnel moved the patients out of RIMS shortly after midnight in a tightly guarded convoy. Although officials initially remained silent about the relocation, it was later confirmed that the trio had been transferred to Churachandpur Medical College.
Authorities stated that the transfer was a strategic move aimed at defusing the growing tension and ensuring the safety of patients, medical staff, and the public. The presence of the injured youths had drawn large groups of protesters, leading to fears of possible clashes.
For nearly two days, the hospital campus remained under high alert as police and security forces struggled to manage the crowd and prevent the situation from spiralling out of control.
Following the midnight transfer, calm was restored at RIMS, though security deployment remains in place as a precautionary measure to prevent any fresh disturbances.
