Ukhrul, July 18, 2026: The Ukhrul Forest Division has brought laurels to the district after receiving the state-level award for planting the maximum number of saplings under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0” campaign during the 77th Van Mahotsav celebrations.
The award was presented during the State-Level Green Finale of the 77th Van Mahotsav Celebration, 2026, held at the City Convention Centre in Imphal on July 18. Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Losii Dikho presented the award to the Division.
Ukhrul Forest Division received the honour under the category “Maximum Number of Saplings Plantation – Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0” for planting 4,31,493 saplings between June 5 and July 14, 2026, the highest among all districts in Manipur.
The nationwide Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0 campaign was launched on June 5 on the occasion of World Environment Day. The plantation drive was implemented across Ukhrul district with extensive participation from government departments and local communities.
The achievement was made possible through the collective efforts of the District Administration, government officers, village authorities, non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations, Van Dhan Vikas Kendras, educational institutions, churches, security forces, orphanages, youth organisations and Self-Help Groups.
Water Resource Conservation Groups from 23 villages under the Community-Based Sustainable Forest Management for Water Resource Conservation in Manipur, popularly known as COSFOM, also made significant contributions to the plantation campaign.
The plantations focused on springshed restoration, watershed management, biodiversity conservation and the protection of community forests, turning the initiative into a people-driven environmental movement.
Apart from undertaking large-scale plantation activities, the Forest Division also organised an extensive free seedling distribution programme through its nurseries. Thousands of quality seedlings were distributed to various stakeholders to encourage wider public participation in afforestation and greening initiatives.
Divisional Forest Officer, Ukhrul, Laishram Gitla, IFS, expressed gratitude to all the stakeholders for their enthusiastic participation and cooperation.
She said the achievement demonstrated that environmental conservation could succeed only through community ownership and partnership.
The DFO appealed to the people of Ukhrul district to protect, nurture and ensure the survival of every sapling planted during the campaign. She also urged communities to replace saplings that fail to survive by collecting fresh seedlings from the Forest Division during the next plantation season.
The recognition is expected to encourage greater public participation in future afforestation and environmental conservation programmes and further strengthen Ukhrul’s position as a leading district in community-driven forest conservation in Manipur.
