Tamenglong, July 22: The Joint Tribes’ Council Manipur (JTCM) and the Western Command of the Naga Village Guard have strongly condemned the recent violence and arson reported in Bitiang (Laphok) village of Noney district, issuing separate statements calling for unity and vigilance among the Zeme, Liangmai, Rongmei and Inpui communities.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the JTCM alleged that members of the Naga Village Guard stationed at Bitiang village were attacked by ZUF (J). The council described the incident as a serious threat to peace, public safety and the security of indigenous communities in the region.
The council appealed to community members to remain united during the ongoing tensions and urged all individuals, organisations and village authorities not to extend any form of assistance or support to those it identified as hostile elements. It also called upon the government and security agencies to take immediate steps to contain the situation and restore normalcy.
In a separate communiqué, the Western Command of the Naga Village Guard also condemned the alleged attack, describing it as a grave assault on the indigenous population. The organisation urged members of the Zeme, Liangmai, Rongmei and Inpui communities to stand together and remain vigilant in the face of the prevailing security situation.
The statement warned against any collaboration with armed groups it considers hostile and said those found assisting such groups would face consequences. It further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting what it described as the ancestral lands and interests of the indigenous communities.
The two statements come amid heightened tensions in parts of Noney district following recent incidents of violence. Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the allegations contained in the statements.
