Ukhrul, August 5: The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) on Wednesday strongly condemned the indefinite blockade imposed by the Working Committee of Kuki Civil Society Organisations (WCKCSO), Ukhrul, describing it as “unacceptable” and a direct challenge to what it termed the “absolute rights” of the Tangkhul Nagas over their ancestral land.
In a press communiqué issued on August 5, the TNL Working Committee stated that the indefinite total shutdown, which came into effect from 12:00 a.m. along National Highway-202, was an attempt to curtail the rights and free movement of the Tangkhul Naga community. The organisation alleged that since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict on February 7, 2026, movement along the Imphal–Ukhrul–Kamjong route has remained severely affected due to what it described as a prolonged siege of the highway.
The TNL further alleged that the blockade announced by the WCKCSO was imposed despite the latter’s demands being directed at the State Government. It questioned why the Tangkhul Naga community should be affected by what it described as the government’s failure to respond to those demands.
The organisation also made a series of allegations against Kuki militant groups and civil society organisations, accusing them of being responsible for the prevailing crisis and various acts of violence. It criticised statements attributed to the WCKCSO regarding reciprocal blockades, describing them as provocative and inappropriate.
Expressing concern over what it described as the growing influence of Kuki organisations in regulating movement along the highway, the TNL questioned how such groups were able to issue permissions for the movement of selected government agencies. It urged the Manipur Government to clarify the situation and take appropriate measures to ensure the rule of law.
The press communiqué concluded with a call on the State Government, led by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s successor Khemchand-led ministry, to respond to what the organisation described as a matter of serious public concern.
