UKHRUL, August 6: A nine-year-old schoolgirl who narrowly escaped death after being buried in a midnight landslide in Ukhrul Town is now recovering, but her family is urgently appealing for financial assistance to enable advanced medical examinations and treatment in Imphal.
The incident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. on August 4, when a massive section of a hillside, estimated to be nearly 200 feet above, collapsed onto an RCC house owned by Mahai NK of Chingai Village. The landslide destroyed two rooms and three kitchens, leaving the occupants terrified.
Among those trapped was Yakhari Kasar (9), daughter of Chihanso Kasar and Rinchui Jamang of Khangkhui Phungdhar (Khunou) Village. At the time of the incident, the Class IV (four) student of KTL Higher Secondary School was asleep.
According to family members, the force of the landslide buried the child under mud up to her neck. Despite being trapped, Yakhari managed to call out to her aunt, Leiyachan Jamang (23), who immediately rushed to rescue her using the flashlight on her mobile phone. Realising she could not free the child alone, Leiyachan alerted nearby residents, who quickly responded and dug Yakhari out from the debris before rushing her to the District Hospital, Ukhrul (Hungpung).
Leiyachan also sustained injuries to her legs and back during the rescue attempt but is reported to be in stable condition.
Doctors at the district hospital found that Yakhari had suffered a sprained ankle, a dislocated shoulder, and bleeding from the mouth following the impact. Although her condition has improved significantly since the incident, she is still unable to walk independently.
Speaking to Tangkhul Express, Yakhari’s uncle Sany Awungshi said the child is showing encouraging signs of recovery because of her young age. However, the family remains deeply concerned about possible internal or spinal injuries that may not be immediately visible.
“We want to take her to Imphal for an MRI or CT scan to ensure there are no long-term complications. We want to be certain she will recover fully and have a normal future,” he said.
Yakhari is the eldest of four siblings and belongs to an economically disadvantaged family. To pursue her education, she had been staying with her aunt in a rented room in Ukhrul Town, where her aunt worked part-time in a local shop to support both their living expenses and the child’s schooling.
With the family struggling financially, they say they are unable to bear the cost of further medical investigations and treatment in the state capital.
The family has therefore appealed to the Government, civil society organisations, churches, well-wishers and the general public to extend humanitarian assistance to help Yakhari receive the specialised medical care she needs.
