Tamenglong, August 21, 2026: The 95th Martyrdom Anniversary of revered freedom fighter and spiritual leader Haipou Jadonang will be observed on August 29, 2026, at Tamenglong Headquarters. The programme will be organised by the Joint Tribes’ Council Manipur (Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei and Zeme).
Born in 1905 at Puiluan (Kambiron) village in present-day Noney District, Haipou Jadonang was a visionary spiritual leader and political activist who fought against British colonial rule and advocated for an independent “Makam Gwangdi” (Naga Raj).
Jadonang promoted monotheism and social reforms and organised the Riphen, a group of armed youth, to resist colonial oppression. He was arrested by British Political Agent J.C. Higgins on February 19, 1931. He was subsequently executed by hanging on August 29, 1931, at the age of 26, on the banks of the Nambul River in Imphal, on charges of sedition and waging war against the Crown.
Following his death, his movement was carried forward by his disciple, Rani Gaidinliu, who continued the struggle for Zeliangrong self-determination.
The commemorative programme at Tamenglong HQ will include a formal tribute function, floral offerings, cultural programmes and traditional rituals. The observance is aimed at educating students and young people about Jadonang’s life, vision and historic struggle against colonial rule.
The Observation Committee, under the aegis of the Joint Tribes’ Council Manipur, has appealed to the people of Tamenglong District to participate in large numbers and pay homage to the departed martyr on August 29.
The Committee has also encouraged citizens to light candles at their homes at dusk as a mark of respect. Civil society organisations, community leaders and well-wishers have been urged to extend their support in making the 95th anniversary observance a meaningful and memorable occasion.
The programme is expected to reaffirm the shared heritage, unity and pride of the Zeliangrong community and the people of Manipur.
