September 8, 2026: The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced that the ongoing inter-district economic blockade will be intensified indefinitely across major National Highways in Manipur from 1:00 AM on September 9, escalating its protest over the killing of six Nagas on May 13, 2026.
The decision was taken pursuant to a resolution adopted at the UNC’s Emergency Presidential Council Meeting held on September 2 at Ukhrul.
Under the intensified blockade, all goods-laden vehicles will be stopped from plying along National Highways, including NH-202 (Jessami), NH-37 (Jiribam), NH-102A (Tadubi–Ukhrul), and NH-2.
The UNC, however, said vehicles transporting essential emergency services would be exempted from the blockade. These include vehicles carrying medical supplies, media personnel, power, telecommunications and water supply.
The council described the economic blockade as a collective expression of the Naga community’s grievances and a demand for justice and accountability in connection with the deaths of six Nagas who, according to the UNC, were brutally killed, mutilated and dismembered on May 13.
“The economic blockade is a collective expression of our grievances and a call for justice and accountability,” the UNC said in its statement issued on September 8.
The council appealed to the general public to cooperate with the intensified blockade until justice is delivered.
The announcement is expected to have a significant impact on the movement of commercial goods and supplies along the affected highway corridors, particularly with all goods-laden vehicles being barred from movement indefinitely.
