New Delhi, September 8, 2026: The North East India Citizens Forum, Delhi (NEICFD), has strongly condemned the alleged killing of renowned Manipuri musician, guitarist and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh, 55, in South Delhi, demanding a prompt and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to the Forum, Singh was allegedly assaulted by a group of men outside his residence late on Sunday night, September 6, following an altercation after he reportedly objected to loud noise and disturbance in the area. He succumbed to his injuries on Monday, September 7.
The NEICFD said no disagreement, argument or provocation could justify such violence or the loss of a human life.
Describing Singh as a distinguished son of Manipur, the Forum said his death was a major loss to the State’s music fraternity. Singh was known as a guitarist, music teacher and contributor to Manipur’s Western and rock music movement, having performed with prominent bands and dedicated himself to mentoring young musicians.
The Forum has demanded a prompt, impartial and thorough investigation, urging the Delhi Police to identify all those responsible and prosecute them in accordance with the law.
It also called for all available CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts and other evidence to be examined to establish the complete circumstances and motive behind the assault, including the possibility of any prejudice or discrimination.
The NEICFD further appealed to the Union Home Minister to take personal cognizance of the killing and ensure that the Delhi Police handles the investigation with seriousness, transparency and urgency.
The Forum also urged the government to take concrete steps to strengthen the safety and security of people from the Northeast living in the national capital.
“Delhi is the capital of every Indian,” the Forum said, stressing that every citizen, irrespective of region, ethnicity, language or culture, has the right to live with safety, dignity and without fear.
The NEICFD also expressed disappointment over what it described as inadequate coverage of the incident by sections of the mainstream media. It said the killing of a respected musician and cultural figure in the national capital deserved serious public attention and should not be treated as a lesser news story because the victim was from the Northeast.
The Forum called for fair, responsible and proportionate media coverage of violence against people from the Northeast, warning that such incidents should not be allowed to disappear from public discourse.
Offering condolences to Singh’s family, friends, students and admirers, the NEICFD said it stood with the people of Manipur in their grief.
“We demand justice for Shri Chongtham Vikram Singh,” the Forum said.
