UKHRUL: Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Hungpung, Ukhrul, inaugurated its Annual Games and Sports-cum-Literary Meet 2026 under the theme “Beyond the Finish Line: Where Athletics Meet Articulation,” bringing together students to celebrate sportsmanship, creativity, literary expression and holistic education.
The inaugural programme was attended by Hungyo Yurreikan, Sub-Deputy Collector (HQ), Ukhrul, as the chief guest, while Sunita Jajo, MES, Zonal Education Officer (ZEO), Ukhrul, attended as a special guest.
The programme began with the hoisting of the sports flag by the chief guest, followed by the lighting of the sports torch by the school’s Best Athletes of 2025. The chief guest inspected the contingents, and the flag bearers administered the oath to the participants, reaffirming their commitment to fair play, discipline and sportsmanship. The programme also featured a march past by the participating students before the chief guest formally declared the Annual Games and Sports-cum-Literary Meet 2026 open.

Addressing the gathering, Hungyo Yurreikan highlighted the importance of sports in students’ lives and encouraged them to participate actively in extracurricular activities alongside their academic pursuits. He also shared a personal connection with the institution, mentioning that his wife is an alumna of Sacred Heart School.
In her address, ZEO Sunita Jajo said that such programmes are not merely celebrations but important platforms for nurturing students’ talents, discipline, confidence and leadership qualities.
Referring to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Jajo highlighted the importance of integrating sports into school education as part of a broader approach to holistic learning. She emphasised that education should go beyond academic achievement to promote the physical, intellectual, creative and social development of students.
Explaining the significance of the event’s theme, Jajo described the relationship between sports and literature, stating, “Sports build character, while literature gives that character a voice.”
She further said that the meet was not simply about winning trophies and certificates but also about building friendships, developing confidence, discovering talents and creating lasting memories. Concluding her message, she reminded the students that while the finish line of a race may mark the end of a competition, every finish line in life can become the beginning of a new journey.
The two-day event features competitions among four houses—Green, Yellow, Blue and Red—encouraging teamwork, healthy competition and unity among students. The programme includes a range of sports and literary activities designed to provide students with opportunities to showcase their abilities both on and off the field.
The competitions include junior and senior categories in duet performances, quiz, choreography, solo dance, solo song, mime play, debate and extempore speech, along with a talent show. The diverse range of events reflects the school’s emphasis on balancing physical fitness with intellectual development, artistic expression and public-speaking skills.
The programme was attended by priests from Catholic churches across Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, representatives of the Tangkhul Catholic Council, Tangkhul Catholic Shanao Long, THYSO, the Hungpung village headman, the Hamleikhong chairman and the Tangkhul Catholic Youth Federation (TCYF), among others.
Through the annual meet, Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School seeks to provide students with a platform to discover their potential, strengthen their confidence and develop values that extend beyond the classroom. The theme underscores the idea that success in education is measured not only by achievements in competition but also by the ability to express oneself, work with others and grow into responsible individuals.
