Amid the ongoing ethnic unrest in Ukhrul district, senior BJP leader M.K. Preshow Shimray has appealed to the state government for urgent intervention to strengthen critical healthcare infrastructure in the region.
In a formal letter addressed to Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Shimray highlighted the “prevailing emergency situation” in Ukhrul and stressed the need for immediate deployment of medical resources to ensure uninterrupted essential health services for the affected population.

Referring to a communication from the Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner dated April 26, Shimray outlined a series of urgent requirements for Ukhrul District Hospital. These include the immediate posting of key medical specialists such as senior surgeons, orthopedic experts, anesthetists, ENT specialists, and forensic experts.
The letter further emphasized the need to repair and restore oxygen generation plants at both the district hospital and Community Health Centre in Somdal. Shimray also called for making the Ukhrul Blood Bank fully operational, citing its importance in handling emergency cases during the crisis.
Highlighting gaps in emergency preparedness, the BJP spokesperson urged the government to supply additional medicines and consumables beyond regular stock. He also sought the repatriation of medical staff and drivers currently deployed elsewhere back to Ukhrul to address manpower shortages.
Among other key demands were the installation of a CT scan facility at the district hospital and the provision of a mortuary storage cabinet capable of handling multiple bodies, reflecting the gravity of the situation on the ground.
Shimray expressed hope for “necessary and immediate action” from the state government, underlining that timely intervention could significantly ease the suffering of people caught in the ongoing conflict.
The appeal comes at a time when several districts in Manipur continue to grapple with instability, placing additional strain on already limited healthcare systems.
