Imphal, May 3 (DIPR): The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Manipur, in collaboration with the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM), observed World Press Freedom Day 2026 at the DIPR Auditorium, Imphal, under the global theme “Shaping a Future at Peace.”

The event was attended by Director, Information and Public Relations, Dr. Th. Charanjeet Singh, President of AMWJU, Shri Asem Bhakta, and President of EGM, Shri Khoijendra Khomdram, who also served as Presidium Members. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Charanjeet Singh highlighted the significance of the day as a reminder of the importance of press freedom and the need to uphold it. He paid tribute to journalists and media personnel worldwide who have lost their lives in the line of duty while defending press freedom. Emphasizing that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, he noted that it operates within the framework of the Constitution, alongside the legislature, executive, and judiciary, ensuring accountability and maintaining checks and balances. He further stated that while press freedom must be respected and protected, it is not absolute. Referring to Article 19 of the Constitution of India, he underlined that freedom of expression is subject to reasonable restrictions and urged media professionals to act responsibly, keeping in mind national security, integrity, public order, morality, and decency.
Speaking as a Presidium Member, AMWJU President Shri Asem Bhakta pointed out that although World Press Freedom Day is observed in nearly 195 countries, awareness remains limited in some regions. He expressed hope for wider participation and greater awareness in the years to come.
Delivering the keynote address, EGM Secretary Shri Yumnam Rupachandra stressed the critical role of press freedom in promoting peace, particularly in conflict-affected regions like Manipur. Reflecting on the theme, he stated that peace is built on trust, truth, and dialogue—values upheld by a free and responsible press. He cautioned that misinformation and fear can spread rapidly in times of conflict, making responsible journalism essential.

Shri Rupachandra further emphasized that journalists are not mere observers but key contributors to society, ensuring that all voices are heard with fairness and dignity. He called for the protection of journalists, promotion of ethical reporting, and encouragement of dialogue so that the media can serve as a bridge within society. Also speaking on the occasion, EGM President Shri Khoijendra Khomdram remarked that freedom of speech and expression must be exercised responsibly. He highlighted the role of editors in ensuring that news content is truthful, accurate, and in the public interest. The speakers collectively urged stakeholders to support responsible journalism, noting that an informed society is fundamental to lasting peace and a strong democracy. The programme was attended by senior journalists, editors, and officials of DIPR, among others.
