Senapati, May 3, 2026: The United Naga Council (UNC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of A.S. Arthur, a veteran political leader and former minister of Manipur, who died on May 2, 2026, at Apollo Hospital following a prolonged illness. He was 99.

In a condolence message issued from its Tahamzam (Senapati) headquarters, the UNC stated that the late Arthur hailed from Shangshak Phunghon village in Ukhrul District and had a distinguished career in public service spanning several decades. Arthur represented the 44-Ukhrul (ST) Assembly Constituency and served as Minister handling key portfolios, including General Administration and Forest, from 1994 to 1997. During his tenure in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, he was known for articulating the concerns of hill communities with clarity and conviction. The UNC noted that his leadership reflected a deep commitment to safeguarding indigenous heritage and promoting inclusive governance. Describing him as a seasoned politician and respected elder, the council said his humility, wisdom, and dedication earned admiration across political and social divides.

Calling his demise a “great loss,” the UNC extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Shangshak Phunghon village, the Tangkhul community, and the state of Manipur. The council also prayed for strength and comfort for the grieving family during this time of loss.
“His life of service will continue to inspire future generations,” the message added, while praying for his eternal peace.
