Kakching, May 22: In a strong appeal for peace and restoration of normalcy in Manipur, hundreds of students on Friday staged a sit-in protest at Langmeidong Higher Secondary School in Kakching district, voicing concern over the prolonged violence and its devastating impact on education and the future of students.
The protest programme was organised by the Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF) Kakching District Committee under the aegis of the MSF Head Office. Students gathered in large numbers at the school premises carrying banners and placards bearing messages such as “We Want Peace,” “We Want Proper Education,” “Let Us Live Freely,” and other slogans calling for an end to unrest in the state.
The protesting students expressed anguish over the continuing conflict in Manipur, which has persisted since May 2023, stating that the prolonged unrest has severely disrupted academic activities and negatively affected students’ mental well-being, safety and future prospects. Many students highlighted that repeated disturbances, insecurity and uncertainty have made it increasingly difficult to focus on studies and pursue education in a normal environment.
According to organisers, the sit-in protest was aimed at drawing the attention of the government and concerned authorities to the urgent need for peace and stability in the state. They maintained that students, who represent the future of society, should not be made to suffer because of prolonged violence and instability.
The organisers further stated that educational institutions across the state have faced repeated disruptions due to the conflict, forcing students to struggle with irregular classes, uncertainty over examinations and limited access to proper learning facilities. They stressed that the right to education must be protected and called for immediate measures to ensure a peaceful atmosphere conducive to academic development.
MSF leaders said the agitation in Kakching is part of a larger, phase-wise student movement being conducted in different districts of Manipur under the guidance of the federation’s head office. Similar demonstrations are reportedly being organised to collectively raise the voice of students and demand lasting peace, security and uninterrupted education.
During the protest, students also appealed to all stakeholders, including the government, civil society organisations and community leaders, to work collectively towards ending violence and restoring harmony in the state. They asserted that peace is essential not only for public safety but also for safeguarding the dreams and aspirations of thousands of students whose futures remain uncertain amid the ongoing crisis.
The demonstration concluded peacefully, with students reaffirming their demand for peace, normalcy and an educational environment free from fear and violence.
