Imphal, August 27, 2026: Four Liangmai Naga civilians were killed and another person critically injured in a deadly ambush along the IT Road between Makui Ashang and Makui Thanamba villages in Kangpokpi district on Thursday morning.
According to statements issued by the United Naga Council (UNC), the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the Working Committee of JTC-Manipur and the Chandel Naga People’s Organisation (CNPO), the incident occurred at around 8:30 AM when armed Kuki militants allegedly ambushed Naga civilians travelling along the IT Road.
The victims were identified as Tadsongwibou/Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, Founder and Principal of Right Path School, T. Khullen; Mariakdibou Wijunamai, Executive Member of Makui Youth Club; Wisobou Charenamai, Chairman of Chawangkining Village Authority and former Vice President of the Liangmai Naga Council; and Anil Wijunamai, Executive Member of Makui Youth Club.
Gaikamang Ringkangmai/Charenamei was reported injured in the attack. The statements also contain differing references regarding another person: the UNC identifies Japou MK, Student Leader of Thonglang Akutpa, as having escaped the incident, while the CNPO statement says another person was reportedly missing. The discrepancy could not be independently verified from the statements.
The UNC, ANSAM, TNL, JTC-Manipur and CNPO strongly condemned the attack and expressed grief over the loss of the four lives. The organisations described the incident as a serious security failure and raised concerns over the safety of Naga civilians travelling along the IT Road.
The Working Committee of JTC-Manipur, in its statement titled “Blood on the IT Road, Silence in the System – Government’s Partisanship has Become a License to Kill Naga Sons,” expressed outrage over the attack and alleged that armed Kuki militants belonging to KNF(P) and KRA were responsible. The organisation accused the government and security agencies of failing to adequately protect Naga civilians and demanded immediate justice.
JTC-Manipur further alleged that security operations had disproportionately affected Naga communities while militants operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement continued to carry out attacks. It called upon the government to take responsibility for the security situation and ensure justice for the victims.
The Chandel Naga People’s Organisation (CNPO) also condemned what it described as an “unprovoked, premeditated and cold-blooded ambush” on unarmed Liangmai Naga civilians. CNPO expressed concern over the apparent security failure surrounding the incident and demanded accountability for any negligence, dereliction of duty or institutional failure that may have enabled the attack.
CNPO endorsed the demand of the United Naga Council for immediate government intervention, prosecution of those responsible and the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to establish the facts and fix accountability.
The organisations also expressed concern that the incident could further aggravate insecurity and mistrust among communities in the hills of Manipur, while calling for the protection of civilians and restoration of peace.
One-Day Genna on August 28
In solidarity with the bereaved families and the Liangmai community, the United Naga Council announced a one-day Genna on August 28, 2026, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM across Naga areas and district headquarters.
During the stipulated period, vehicular movement, shops and business establishments, government offices, and private and government institutions are to remain closed. Emergency services and Board/Common Examinations have been exempted.
ANSAM endorsed the UNC-called Genna and appealed to the Naga public to observe it with unity, discipline, dignity and solemn respect for the departed souls.
The CNPO also extended its support to the UNC-called Genna and appealed to Naga villages, institutions, civic bodies, business establishments and citizens within its jurisdiction to observe the programme with solemnity, unity and restraint.
Meanwhile, the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) separately announced a 12-hour Genna beginning at 6:00 AM on August 28, appealing to the public to remain at home and refrain from going to the fields and undertaking routine activities.
The Naga organisations conveyed their deepest condolences to the bereaved families and called upon the authorities to conduct a credible, impartial and time-bound investigation, bring the perpetrators to justice and take effective measures to prevent further attacks on civilians.
