Imphal, October 29, 2026: The United Naga Council (UNC) and the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), have endorsed the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI)’s proposed Mega Rally scheduled for October 31 in Imphal, calling for public participation over concerns surrounding the security situation and the protection of indigenous communities in Manipur.
In separate statements issued on October 27 and 29, respectively, the two organisations expressed solidarity with the rally and urged Naga organisations, students, youth, churches, village authorities and the general public to participate in the programme peacefully.
The COCOMI rally is expected to press for three key demands: abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups, an end to what the organisations describe as a proxy war in Manipur, and the replacement of Assam Rifles with another neutral Central security force, such as the Border Security Force (BSF), particularly in sensitive and border areas.
The UNC, in its endorsement signed by president NG Lorho, stated that the continuing security situation and the activities of Kuki militant groups operating under the SoO framework had raised serious concerns about the safety of indigenous communities and the general public. It also questioned the role of Assam Rifles in border and conflict-affected areas, alleging that the force had failed to adequately address security concerns and had been perceived as partisan. These remain the organisation’s allegations.
As part of its solidarity with the Imphal rally, the UNC announced that peaceful sit-in protests or solidarity rallies would be held simultaneously at all Naga district headquarters on October 31 from 11 am onwards.
The council called upon the Naga People’s Union, Imphal, other Naga frontal organisations and churches to mobilise public participation in the Imphal rally. It also entrusted district apex bodies, tribal Hohos and district-level frontal organisations with the responsibility of organising the parallel programmes in their respective headquarters.
The UNC appealed to Naga tribal Hohos, frontal organisations, village authorities, churches, women, youth and students to participate in large numbers, stating that collective action was necessary to oppose violence and protect ancestral land and identity.
ANSAM, in its endorsement dated October 29, also expressed unequivocal support for the UNC’s appeal and the COCOMI rally. The students’ body reiterated the three demands and added a fourth: the effective implementation of the Guwahati Talks Agreements dated September 26, 2026.
ANSAM further endorsed the UNC’s call for simultaneous peaceful sit-in protests and solidarity rallies across Naga district headquarters from 11 am on October 31. It appealed to its units, Naga organisations, students, youth and the general public to demonstrate unity through peaceful, disciplined and responsible participation.
Both organisations framed their appeals around the protection of indigenous rights, security, dignity and the future of succeeding generations.
The proposed rally and parallel programmes come amid continuing tensions over the security situation in Manipur. The organisations have urged public participation to press their demands, while emphasising solidarity through the planned demonstrations.
