Ukhrul, July 14, 2026: The Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) and the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) have strongly condemned the alleged detention and disappearance of four villagers from Sharkaphung, also known as Shikibung, during a security forces’ combing operation on Tuesday morning.
In separate statements issued on July 14, both organisations claimed that the four villagers were taken away during a joint operation conducted by security personnel in parts of the Tangkhul region, including TM Kasom, Sharkaphung and Lungphu villages.
According to the organisations, the whereabouts and condition of the four villagers remained unknown at the time of issuing their statements, causing fear and anxiety among their families and the local population.
The statements identified three of the villagers as Wungphayo Kasar, Ninglum Shimrah and Yaoreingam Lungleng. However, the two organisations provided different names for the fourth individual. While the TKS statement named Diamond Ramror, the TNL Working Committee identified the fourth villager as Vareiyo Lungleng.
TKS said information received from village authorities and residents described the missing persons as innocent, law-abiding civilians actively involved in protecting their village and community amid the prevailing security situation.
The students’ body also expressed concern over allegations that no prior information about the combing operation was communicated to the nearest police station. It further claimed that information subsequently released by Manipur Police was inconsistent with accounts provided by villagers and the complainant.
TKS demanded that the authorities immediately disclose the whereabouts and physical condition of the villagers and ensure their safe and unconditional release if they were being held by any security agency.
It also called for a transparent, impartial and time-bound inquiry into the operation and the subsequent disappearance of the villagers. The organisation urged the authorities to fix responsibility and take appropriate action against any individual or agency found to have acted unlawfully or disseminated misleading information.
The TNL Working Committee, meanwhile, alleged that the villagers were taken away during a combined operation involving personnel from different security forces and military units. It demanded their release within 24 hours, warning that failure to do so could trigger serious civil unrest.
The committee accused security forces of carrying out aggressive operations in villages that have already been affected by the continuing conflict and said such actions could further aggravate the situation.
TKS appealed to the Government of Manipur, the Government of India, the National Human Rights Commission and other competent authorities to intervene immediately and ensure transparency, accountability and justice.
Both organisations expressed solidarity with the families of the missing villagers and the people of Sharkaphung/Shikibung, while calling for urgent clarification and measures to secure their safe return.
