Ukhrul, July 25: The South-East Tangkhul Co-ordination Committee (SETCOCOM) has strongly condemned the destruction of the Bailey Bridge over the Chatric River, describing the bombing as a grave attack on civilian infrastructure that has disrupted the lives of thousands of residents in Kamjong district.
In a press statement issued on Friday, SETCOCOM said the bridge was destroyed in the early hours of July 21, 2026, allegedly with a powerful bomb, calling the incident a direct threat to human life and public safety.
The committee stated that the Bailey Bridge served as the primary lifeline for many villages, enabling schoolchildren to attend classes, patients to reach healthcare facilities, farmers to transport produce to markets, and families to remain connected. Its destruction, the statement said, has left thousands of people isolated and facing severe hardship.
Calling the attack “cowardly” and “inhuman,” SETCOCOM said the perpetrators had shown complete disregard for the welfare of ordinary citizens by targeting essential public infrastructure. The committee maintained that the incident amounted to an attack on the entire South-East Tangkhul community.
SETCOCOM urged the government and law enforcement agencies to immediately investigate the incident, identify and prosecute those responsible, reconstruct the damaged bridge on a war footing, and strengthen security measures to protect critical public infrastructure in the region.
The committee also appealed to the public to remain united against anti-social elements seeking to destabilise the area. It reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing the matter with the highest authorities until justice is served and the bridge is rebuilt, expressing solidarity with all affected villagers.
