Imphal, August 24, 2026: Manipur University on Monday felicitated Dr Pukhrambam Lilabati Devi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Dance and Music, following her selection for the prestigious National Award to Teachers 2026 by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
The felicitation was held at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, where Manipur University Vice-Chancellor (In-charge), Prof. R.K. Hemakumar Singh, honoured Dr Lilabati Devi with a traditional Lengyan and congratulated her for bringing national recognition to the university.
Dr Lilabati Devi is the first recipient of the National Award to Teachers from Manipur University, marking a significant achievement for the institution and the State of Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Hemakumar described the recognition as a proud moment for Manipur University and the entire State. He said Dr Lilabati Devi’s achievement would inspire teachers, scholars and students of the university to pursue excellence in teaching, research and their respective academic fields.
He further said that September 5, Teachers’ Day, would be a memorable occasion for Manipur University as Dr Lilabati Devi is scheduled to receive the National Award to Teachers 2026 from the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at a national award ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Dr Lilabati Devi is among 21 teachers from Higher Educational Institutions and Polytechnics across India selected for the National Award to Teachers 2026. She is also one of only two awardees from the Northeast, with the other being Prof. Ankuran Dutta of Gauhati University, Assam. The award carries a Certificate of Merit, a cash prize of ₹50,000 and a silver medal.
With around 15 years of experience, Dr Lilabati Devi has established a distinguished career in the teaching, research and performance of Manipuri dance and Bharatanatyam. Her academic work combines traditional knowledge, practical training, creative learning, research and innovative teaching methods aimed at developing students’ artistic and academic abilities.
Her contribution to the promotion of Manipuri culture also extends beyond India. She has participated in international performances, academic presentations and cultural programmes in countries including Korea, Kazakhstan, Tunisia and Myanmar.
In the field of research and innovation, Dr Lilabati Devi holds a Ph.D. in Dance and has authored books and published research papers in UGC-recognised publications. She has also completed a Major Research Project under UGC STRIDE Component-1, New Delhi, and has served as a resource person, paper presenter and coordinator in various national and international academic programmes.
Her earlier achievements include the Manipur State Kala Akademi Young Talent Award and Top Grade recognition in Manipuri Dance by Prasar Bharati. Manipur University had previously felicitated her during its 46th Foundation-cum-Commendation Day for these accomplishments.
The latest national recognition is being seen as another major milestone for the Department of Dance and Music and for Manipur University, while also highlighting the contribution of Manipur’s performing arts traditions and the Northeast to India’s higher education landscape.
The university community congratulated Dr Pukhrambam Lilabati Devi and wished her continued success in teaching, research and her efforts towards the promotion and preservation of Manipur’s rich cultural heritage.
