Imphal, August 25, 2026: Manipur University has launched its awareness activities under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, joining the University Grants Commission’s online Chetna Series Lecture on “TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan—Creating Awareness for a TB-Free India.”
The programme, organised by the UGC under the Ministry of Education through Webex, focused on strengthening awareness about tuberculosis prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment. It also highlighted the role of higher educational institutions in achieving the national goal of a TB-free India.
Prof. R.K. Hemakumar Singh, Vice-Chancellor (In-charge), Manipur University, along with Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Deans, faculty members, officials, the Medical Officer of the University Health Centre, NSS representatives and other members of the university community, participated in the online programme.
During the programme, UGC Secretary Prof. Shyama Rath and Dr. Shobini Rajan, Deputy Director General of the Central TB Division, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, stressed the importance of public awareness, early testing, timely diagnosis and treatment, and community participation in eliminating tuberculosis.

They also highlighted the important role of universities, students and faculty members in addressing misinformation and reducing the stigma associated with TB.
As part of the Joint Action Plan for implementing the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan in higher education institutions, universities and colleges have been encouraged to enrol as Ni-kshay Mitras, involve students, faculty members and alumni, and integrate TB awareness into community outreach programmes.
The University Grants Commission has also encouraged institutions to disseminate verified information about TB through websites, digital platforms and social media, besides organising rallies, street plays, poster campaigns and community sensitisation programmes.
As a follow-up initiative, the Manipur University Health Centre plans to conduct department-wise TB awareness sessions covering all 47 departments of the university in collaboration with the State TB Unit of the Health Department.
Under the proposed programme, two departments will be covered every week, with each session lasting around 30 to 40 minutes. The entire programme is expected to be completed in approximately 24 weeks.
The sessions will cover TB symptoms, transmission, prevention, testing and treatment facilities, the importance of completing treatment, healthy lifestyle practices, and available support for persons affected by TB. The programme will also focus on dispelling myths and reducing stigma surrounding tuberculosis.
Through the initiative, Manipur University aims to strengthen health awareness among students, faculty and staff and contribute to the national campaign towards a TB-free India.
