The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has strongly condemned the killing of two Tangkhul civilians in a brutal attack near Yaolen Kuki village, describing the incident as “inhuman” and a grave failure of state security mechanisms.
In a press communiqué issued by its Working Committee from Ukhrul headquarters on Saturday, TNL expressed outrage over the incident that occurred at approximately 2:35 pm. According to the statement, Kuki armed cadres allegedly opened fire on a group of Tangkhul passengers traveling from Imphal to Ukhrul.
The victims have been identified as Chinaoshang Shimray (45), a retired Indian Army personnel from Tashar village, and Yaruingam Vashum (42) of Kharasom village. Both were reportedly among several passengers traveling in a convoy when the attack took place.
TNL stated that the assault was carried out after a security escort team had already returned towards Litan, leaving the civilian vehicles exposed. At least six vehicles were reportedly targeted, with attackers using sniper rifles and other long-range weapons. The victims, including women, children, and elderly passengers, were caught in what TNL described as a “premeditated and cowardly act.”
The organization further alleged that such incidents have become increasingly frequent since the outbreak of ethnic tensions earlier this year. It cited repeated attacks on civilians in areas including Litan, Laho, Sinakeithei, Sikibung, and Thawai, accusing Kuki militants of systematically targeting Tangkhul villages.
Criticizing both the State and Central governments, TNL accused security forces of failing to curb militant activities. The communiqué described the response as “apathetic,” suggesting that the lack of decisive action has emboldened armed groups to operate with impunity.
“The inability or unwillingness of the security forces to neutralize illegal militants raises serious concerns about competence and accountability,” the statement read, adding that responsibility for the deaths “rests squarely with the State and the Centre.”
The incident has also drawn attention due to its timing, occurring just a day after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visit to Ukhrul, where assurances were reportedly given regarding enhanced road security and convoy protection.
Calling the attack a direct contradiction of those assurances, TNL questioned the government’s commitment to ensuring civilian safety along vulnerable routes.
The Working Committee has demanded that authorities immediately launch a combing operation in Yaolen and surrounding areas to apprehend those responsible and prevent further violence.
The killing has intensified tensions in the region, with growing calls from civil society groups for accountability, stronger security deployment, and urgent intervention to prevent further loss of civilian lives.
