Imphal, May 25: Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh on Monday said that Manipur Police has identified a total of 5,406 sensitive, violent and communal social media posts since June 1, 2023, following the outbreak of ethnic violence in the state, with nearly 3,200 posts removed and 187 pages and accounts blocked as part of efforts to maintain law and order.
The DGP made the statement while addressing a programme held at the 1st Manipur Rifles Ground in Imphal, where Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh flagged off 477 newly procured police vehicles, including armoured vehicles and two-wheelers, aimed at strengthening policing and mobility across the state.
According to Rajiv Singh, the crackdown on objectionable social media content was carried out in coordination with the State Information Technology Department and the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). He said police authorities have been continuously monitoring online platforms to curb the spread of fake news, misinformation, hate speech and provocative communal content that could further aggravate tensions in the violence-hit state.
“Since June 1, 2023, a total of 5,406 sensitive, violent and communal posts were identified, and around 3,200 posts were taken down in coordination with the State IT Department and MeitY. A total of 187 pages and accounts were also blocked,” the DGP stated. He stressed that prevention, monitoring and verification of misinformation remain essential to maintaining public order in Manipur.
Rajiv Singh also highlighted the growing digital outreach of Manipur Police, stating that the department’s official social media platforms have expanded significantly during the crisis period. According to him, the official Facebook page of Manipur Police now has around 79,000 followers, while its X (formerly Twitter) account has gained nearly 27,000 followers, helping authorities issue clarifications and counter rumours.
Recalling the situation when he assumed charge as DGP in June 2023, Singh said Manipur was passing through one of the most difficult phases in its history due to ethnic violence between communities, requiring both immediate operational responses and long-term strengthening of the police institution. He informed that a comprehensive police modernisation plan was submitted to the state government toward the end of 2023.
The DGP further revealed that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs approved ₹196.61 crore on October 31, 2025, to strengthen security infrastructure, mobility, forensic capabilities, communication systems and smart policing initiatives in the state. He said the support from the Centre has significantly enhanced the operational capabilities of Manipur Police and improved preparedness to respond to emerging security challenges.
Regarding deployment of the newly inducted vehicles, Singh said 54 per cent would be allocated to hill districts, while the remaining vehicles would be used in valley districts and technical police units to improve emergency response and logistical support. He also mentioned that Manipur Police signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Security Guard (NSG) in June 2025 for specialised training and capacity enhancement of personnel.
Highlighting anti-extortion efforts, the DGP said a dedicated integrated anti-extortion cell had been established and that more than 1,000 extortionists have so far been arrested from both hill and valley districts. He expressed concern over incidents where protests and road blockades allegedly disrupted police operations against anti-social elements and appealed to the public to extend maximum cooperation to security forces in restoring peace and stability.
The ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur in May 2023 has claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands of people, making it one of the state’s most prolonged and challenging periods of unrest.
