Ukhrul District, Manipur | April 28, 2026
Tension escalated in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Monday after the Ringui Village Protection Committee (RVPC) strongly condemned what it described as an “unprovoked attack” allegedly carried out by armed Kuki militants in Ringui Village under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact.
In an official statement issued by its Information and Publicity Cell, the RVPC said the attack took place at around 10:30 AM on April 28, targeting Naga Village Guards (NVG) who were monitoring the Ringui Horei area within Ringui Naga Village.
According to the statement, the attackers were reportedly armed with sophisticated weapons, and the assault left two village guards seriously injured. The committee further claimed that gunfire continued for hours, spreading fear, panic, and distress among innocent villagers.
“This is not the first time such attacks have occurred in the same location,” the statement noted, accusing Kuki militants of repeated aggression and provocation aimed at destabilizing peace in the region.
The RVPC warned that continuous violence has forced civilians—including women, children, and the elderly—to live under constant fear and uncertainty. It highlighted growing concerns over stray bullets, destruction of homes and properties, forced displacement, and threats to human lives.
The committee also cautioned that such repeated attacks could escalate tensions between the Kuki and Naga communities, potentially triggering a much wider conflict that would threaten peace, communal harmony, and stability across Manipur.
Calling the situation “deeply alarming,” the RVPC urged the competent authorities to intervene immediately to restore peace and ensure the safety of Ringui Village and surrounding areas.
“The Ringui Village stands united in defense of its land, its people, and its right to live in peace and dignity,” the statement concluded.
The incident has once again brought renewed attention to the fragile security situation in the hill districts of Manipur, where ethnic tensions and armed confrontations continue to pose serious challenges to peace and governance.
