NEW DELHI, August 12: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has assured that priority would be given to the long-delayed National Highway projects covering Ukhrul and other parts of Manipur, following a meeting with Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah on Wednesday.
Muivah called on Gadkari and apprised him of the poor condition of NH-202 and NH-102A, besides highlighting the difficulties faced by the people due to delays in road construction and development works.
During the meeting, Gadkari expressed concern over the delay in handing over land to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), particularly in connection with the Ukhrul Bypass and the Shangshak–Tengnoupal sectors.
The Minister also took note of the delays arising from court intervention concerning the Lower Hungpung–Choithar stretch of NH-202 and the Shangshak–Tengnoupal stretch of NH-102A. He observed that such delays had affected the progress of road construction and caused prolonged hardship to the public.
After hearing the issues in detail, Gadkari directed the Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), to accord priority to NH-202 and NH-102A.
He further advised MoRTH Director Narendra Sharma to visit Ukhrul at the earliest to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the road projects and submit a report for appropriate remedial measures.
The proposed field visit is expected to provide a detailed assessment of the existing condition of the highways and the bottlenecks delaying their construction, with the aim of expediting corrective action.
The development comes amid persistent concerns over the condition and slow progress of key highway projects in Ukhrul and adjoining areas, which are considered vital for improving connectivity and easing the difficulties faced by commuters and residents.
