Ukhrul, May 2: khanuithot-khon, the Voice of the Naga Youth, issued a scathing press statement on May 2, 2026, condemning what it describes as a “secessionist rally” organized by the kangpokpi based Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) an organization representing Kuki refugees scheduled for May 3, 2026. The statement represents a sharp escalation in tensions over territorial and political claims in Manipur’s volatile ethnic landscape.

In a press statement released on May 2, the organisation expressed grave concern over the planned observance on May 3, which reportedly includes a 12-hour shutdown along National Highway-2, a rally, and participation by prominent political figures. The group asserted that such an event is not a legitimate form of democratic protest but an “openly secessionist campaign” aimed at dividing the state along ethnic lines. Khanuithot-Khon stated that the Naga people “will not be bystanders to secessionist theatre on ancestral soil,” emphasizing that any attempt to redraw political boundaries or carve out territories based on what it described as “non-indigenous claims” would be firmly opposed. The statement further alleged that the movement behind the event seeks to legitimise territorial division under the guise of political expression, warning that such actions could deepen existing tensions and push the region toward instability. It stressed that the Constitution of India does not permit unilateral separation by any group and described the demand for a separate Union Territory as a direct challenge to the sovereignty and established political order of the country. Raising concern over the reported participation of a sitting Deputy Chief Minister in the event, the organisation questioned the constitutional propriety of such involvement, stating that it “crosses the line from political engagement into endorsement of an unconstitutional agenda.”

Khanuithot-Khon also called upon the United Naga Council (UNC) and other Naga apex bodies to take a firm and uncompromising stand against the event. It urged coordinated efforts to ensure that Naga areas are not used as platforms for what it termed as divisive political projects. In its appeal to authorities, the organisation demanded immediate intervention by the Government of Manipur, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and security agencies. Among its key demands were the withdrawal of any form of official support to the event and preventive measures to ensure that the proposed highway shutdown does not escalate into ethnic confrontation. Reaffirming its position, the group stated that while it respects the right to peaceful assembly, it will strongly oppose any movement that undermines constitutional order, threatens territorial integrity, or fuels communal discord. The statement concluded with a warning that failure to act decisively could lead to further chaos, reiterating its commitment to defend justice, constitutional values, and the rights of indigenous communities.
