Naga Hoho Ousts Executive Council, Launches Major Leadership Overhaul

Senapati, Aug. 4: In a landmark decision aimed at reviving the apex Naga institution, the Naga Hoho has dissolved its incumbent Executive Council after declaring that its functioning had come to a standstill, and has initiated a comprehensive restructuring process to restore effective leadership and strengthen Naga unity.The decision was unanimously adopted during the 3rd Federal Assembly of the Naga Hoho, held on July 31 at Sha Complex, Tahamzam in Senapati district. The proceedings were made public on Tuesday, with the Hoho stating that the move was intended to keep the Naga people informed and to take the organisation forward through collective understanding and cooperation.

The Assembly opened with a solemn tribute to the late Vilanuo Angela Yhome, President of the Naga Mothers’ Association, and six Naga men, including two pastors, who were killed at Leilon Vaiphei village. Members observed two minutes of silence and offered prayers for the departed and their bereaved families.

Following an extensive review of the Executive Council’s performance, the House concluded that the Council had become ineffective and unanimously invoked Article 8(1)(5) of the Yehzabo of the Naga Hoho to terminate the body with immediate effect upon the conclusion of the Assembly.

To ensure administrative continuity, the Assembly appointed Speaker Ino Pauheu Newme as Caretaker to oversee the affairs of the Naga Hoho for the next three months. It also constituted a five-member Search Committee, headed by former Naga Hoho President Ino Chuba Ozukum, to identify and recommend a new Executive Council within the stipulated period. The committee comprises UNC President Ino Ng. Lorho, Ino Tonyho Sumi, ZB President Ino Ningthoudai Gonmei, and Maring Tribe Hoho (MUA) President Ino Wairok Hangsing.

Expressing confidence in the transition, the Federal Assembly said the restructuring exercise is expected to rejuvenate the apex Naga body, reinforce unity and coordination among the Nagas, and provide stronger and more effective leadership for the welfare of the people.

The Assembly further resolved to request the United Naga Council (UNC) to nominate a replacement for the vacant post of Assembly Secretary following the recall of the Lotha Public Organization’s representative. The Naga Hoho appealed to all sections of the Naga community to extend their support and cooperation as it embarks on what it described as an important phase of institutional renewal.
