SENAPATI, August 14, 2026: The Naga People’s Organisation (NPO), Senapati, has extended its full endorsement and support to the United Naga Council’s (UNC) 24-hour Emergency Total Shutdown, following an attack in which two Naga Village Guards were killed and two others injured, according to the organisations’ statements.
In a statement issued on Friday, the NPO said it was acting in solidarity with the UNC and described the reported attack as a grave affront to the Naga people, particularly as it occurred on the occasion of Naga Independence Day. The NPO said the incident had caused “profound grief, anguish and resentment” among the people of Senapati and beyond.
The UNC, in its separate shutdown declaration, alleged that the attack was carried out by KNF-P Kuki militants. It identified the deceased as Wiriliangbou Chawang, 35, and Kawidinang Abonmai, 54, while Namthiulungbou Prinmai, 45, and Maliangjinang Abonmai, 50, were reported injured. The NPO has called upon all its constituent bodies, affiliated organisations, village authorities, civil society organisations, business establishments, institutions, transporters and the general public in Senapati to strictly observe the shutdown.
The shutdown will be observed from 11:00 PM on August 14 to 11:00 PM on August 15, 2026. Shops, business establishments, offices, institutions and other non-essential activities have been asked to remain closed, while medical, fire and other essential emergency services will remain exempted.
The NPO urged citizens to extend full cooperation and observe the shutdown peacefully, voluntarily and in a disciplined manner, stressing that the people of Senapati stand in solidarity with the bereaved families and injured victims.
The UNC has also appealed to Naga citizens to remain calm, united and peaceful, while calling for thorough and impartial investigations into recent incidents and legal action against those found responsible.
The latest development comes amid heightened tensions in parts of Manipur, with the UNC also citing recent incidents of arson, provocation and obstruction as matters requiring investigation. The council has called for the identification of the actual perpetrators and appropriate legal action without delay.
With the NPO’s endorsement, the emergency shutdown is expected to receive broad compliance across Senapati as the Naga civil society body calls for a collective, peaceful expression of solidarity with the victims and their families.
