Ukhrul, July 3, 2026: The deteriorating condition of National Highway-202, barely 13 kilometres from Ukhrul district headquarters, has triggered serious public concern as continuous monsoon rains worsen the already damaged road stretch.
Local residents have expressed strong resentment over what they described as negligence and incomplete execution of the ongoing roadwork. According to sources from the area, portions of the highway were excavated by JCBs but left unfinished midway, turning the stretch into a muddy, uneven and dangerous route for commuters and transporters.
Residents said the half-done construction has not only failed to improve connectivity but has instead made travel more hazardous, especially during the monsoon season. They warned that if the contractor fails to resume and complete the work immediately, and if the concerned authorities do not conduct a proper inspection, the public may be compelled to impose a road blockade in protest.
NH-202 is considered a crucial lifeline for several northern Tangkhul villages and also serves as an important connectivity route towards Jessami and Nagaland. With the monsoon intensifying, the poor condition of the highway has reportedly disrupted movement, delayed essential supplies and placed thousands of commuters at risk.
The public has appealed to NHIDCL, Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah and all concerned authorities to intervene urgently and ensure that the road is restored to motorable condition before the situation develops into a full-scale connectivity crisis.
