Ukhrul, May 5: As the Kuki–Naga crisis nears four months, concerns over security along National Highway-202 (Imphal–Ukhrul) have intensified following a reported incident involving a police-escorted convoy.

According to sources, on May 4, 2026, a convoy travelling from Mahadev to Litan along NH-202 under the escort of Manipur Police personnel from Litan Police Station was allegedly stopped at Shangkai by suspected Kuki militants.
The sources stated that the group intercepted the vehicles and reportedly collected an “illegal tax” ranging from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 per vehicle, despite the convoy being under police protection.
The incident has raised serious concerns among the public regarding the safety of movement along the highway, especially in view of the ongoing tensions in the region. Observers say such developments highlight significant challenges in maintaining law and order and ensuring secure transit for civilians.
