Three-year B.Voc. programme aims to combine degree education with practical training and employment skills
UKHRUL, August 10: Young people in Ukhrul will now have access to a new skill-oriented undergraduate pathway with the launch of a three-year Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) programme by SkillBridge Institute, potentially reducing the need for students to leave the district in search of specialised higher education.
The programme, introduced in collaboration with Lingayas Vidyapeeth/University, is designed to combine academic study with practical training, industry exposure and employability-focused skills, with Hospitality Management forming a key area of specialisation.
SkillBridge announced the programme at a press conference at the Ukhrul Press Club, where Director Yaosangmi Lungleng, Trainer Elflieda Shingnaisui and Trainer Franky Kapangmi outlined the institute’s work and plans for expanding vocational education in the district.
The institute said the programme is structured around the vocational education framework and broadly aligned with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). Students can earn a Diploma after the first year, an Advanced Diploma after the second year and the B.Voc. degree after completing three years.
Admission is open to candidates who have passed Class XII from a recognised board.
Unlike conventional undergraduate courses that often place greater emphasis on classroom-based academic learning, the B.Voc. model is intended to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical training and exposure to workplace practices.
SkillBridge said the programme will be conducted online, allowing students from Ukhrul and other areas to pursue the degree without relocating. The format could also provide an option for working individuals seeking to upgrade their qualifications while continuing their employment.
Speaking about the institute’s development, Yaosangmi said SkillBridge was established in January 2026 at Phungreitang-Khampasom, opposite Viewland Baptist Church, with a focus on creating education and employment opportunities for local youth.
The institute currently offers training in Hospitality Management and Spoken English. Its Hospitality Management course is affiliated with the Tourism, Hospitality and Skill Council (THSC) and includes a two-month diploma-level programme.
Yaosangmi said the institute has trained around 50 students since its establishment and claimed that placement opportunities had been provided to all of them across different parts of India.
He said the experience gained from the institute’s initial training programmes encouraged SkillBridge to move towards degree-level vocational education.
Trainer Elflieda, meanwhile, highlighted the institute’s Spoken English programme, which is designed for learners across different age groups and backgrounds.
She said the course can be tailored to individual requirements, with the institute accepting school and college students, graduates, businesspersons and homemakers.
“We welcome anyone who wants to learn, and the course can be customised according to the requirements of the learner,” she said.
The launch comes at a time when employability and practical skills are becoming increasingly important considerations for students choosing higher education.
For a district where many young people traditionally move outside Ukhrul for education and career opportunities, the availability of a vocational degree programme could provide another option for pursuing higher education closer to home while acquiring skills linked to employment.
SkillBridge said it intends to further expand skill-development opportunities and connect local learners with employment prospects across India.
The institute’s latest initiative therefore places vocational education at the centre of its efforts to create a more accessible pathway from education to skills, and from skills to employment for young people in Ukhrul.
