Ukhrul, June 8: The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has announced a 24-hour total shutdown across its jurisdiction beginning from 7:00 PM on June 8, 2026, following a resolution adopted during a Joint Coordination Meeting held on Monday.
In an official notification issued from its headquarters in Ukhrul, the apex Tangkhul civil body stated that the shutdown is being called to demand the immediate removal of the Assam Rifles outpost at New Heaven along National Highway-202, which it described as an illegal establishment.
The shutdown also seeks criminal action against Assam Rifles personnel allegedly involved in the use of excessive force and the assault of women protesters during recent demonstrations at New Heaven, Shokvao, and Finch Corner.

According to the TNL, the agitation follows growing public outrage over Saturday’s clash between Assam Rifles personnel and local residents protesting the construction of the temporary outpost. The incident reportedly left 22 Tangkhul Naga women injured, many of whom are currently receiving treatment at the District Hospital, Ukhrul.
TNL stated that the shutdown is intended to press authorities to address public concerns and ensure accountability for the alleged actions of security personnel during the protest.
However, essential services will remain exempted from the shutdown. These include medical services, water supply, electricity, and media operations.
The announcement is expected to affect transportation, commercial activities, educational institutions, and government offices across the Tangkhul areas during the shutdown period.
The situation remains tense as civil society organizations and local communities continue to demand the withdrawal of the Assam Rifles outpost and justice for those injured during the protest.
