In a strongly worded press statement, the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong has condemned the continued killing of innocent civilians in Manipur, describing the situation as a grave humanitarian concern and a direct challenge to the rule of law.
The statement, issued on April 18, expressed alarm over the repeated killings of unarmed travellers, stating that such incidents are no longer isolated but indicative of a dangerous and deeply entrenched pattern of violence. TKS stated that the persistence of such acts without decisive intervention reflects a serious breakdown in governance and the State’s inability to ensure the safety of its citizens.
Calling the situation “indefensible and intolerable,” the student body emphasized that no political, ethnic, or ideological justification can legitimize the taking of innocent lives. It further warned that the normalization of such brutality poses a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.
Raising critical questions, TKS sought immediate clarification from the Government of Manipur on the concrete measures undertaken to prevent recurring incidents. It also questioned the progress made in identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the killings and asked why civilians continue to remain vulnerable along key public routes. According to the union, the absence of visible action and outcomes has raised serious concerns about accountability and intent.
In its statement, the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong put forward a set of urgent demands aimed at restoring public confidence and ensuring justice. Foremost among them is the immediate transfer of the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for an independent, impartial, and time-bound investigation. The union asserted that such a move is essential to ensure transparency and credibility in the probe.
Additionally, TKS called for the urgent reassessment and removal of Central Forces, alleging that public trust has significantly eroded due to their failure to perform duties in accordance with the law. It stressed that the role of these forces must be reviewed to restore safety and confidence among the people.
The union also demanded direct accountability from the highest levels of State leadership, including a clear and public response from the Chief Minister and the Cabinet Ministers. It emphasized that leadership must take responsibility and act decisively to address the ongoing crisis.
“The continued silence and inaction are not neutrality; they represent a failure of responsibility,” the statement noted. TKS urged the government to act immediately with transparency and firm resolve to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
Reiterating the urgency of the situation, the union concluded with a strong message that the people will no longer remain silent. It warned that citizens will continue to demand answers, justice, and lasting peace until meaningful action is taken.
The statement comes amid growing public concern over security and governance in Manipur, with calls for accountability and decisive intervention gaining momentum across civil society.nt,” the union asserted, signaling growing public frustration and demand for accountability.
