Ukhrul, June 26, 2026:
The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has expressed serious concern over the government’s handling of the ongoing military tactical intervention in Manipur’s conflict zones, particularly in connection with the Naga-Kuki conflict.
In a press communiqué issued from Ukhrul Headquarters on June 26, the TNL Working Committee stated that the initial move to bring in the Cobra Unit of CRPF following the abduction and subsequent killing of six Liangmai Nagas was seen as a welcome step towards justice delivery and restoration of law and order. However, the committee alleged that the actions of security forces on the ground have raised doubts among the public.
The statement referred to a combing operation launched on June 21 by a combined team of CRPF Cobra Unit and Assam Rifles at Leilon Vaphai, a Kuki village where 18 Naga civilians were reportedly taken hostage on May 13, 2026, and six of them later allegedly murdered and buried on June 10.
According to TNL WC, the security operation reportedly met with strong resistance from armed Kuki militant groups, including the Kuki National Front-President, United Kuki National Army, and Kuki Revolutionary Army. The committee claimed that around 100 armed militants were present at the time of the incident.
The TNL Working Committee alleged that despite the opportunity to apprehend those involved in the abduction and killing of innocent Naga civilians, the operation appeared to be turned into what it described as a staged exercise in favour of Kuki armed groups.
It further stated that Manipur’s Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, wife of Thangboi Kipgen of S.T. Semtinang and President of KNF-P, had reportedly intervened and influenced the operation. The communiqué also alleged that Union Minister of State Dr. Ranjan Singh, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, and senior officials of the Indian Army and paramilitary forces held a meeting, after which the operation was withdrawn and the Kuki armed militants were allegedly allowed safe passage to the KNF-P designated Ebenezer Camp.
The TNL Working Committee questioned the intention of both the State and Central governments in dealing with Kuki militant activities and alleged that their actions appear to contradict sincere efforts to restore peace.
“The State and Central government appear to be in position bereft of concrete decision, transparency and accountability in the vexed matter,” the communiqué stated, adding that the government must answer the people on its commitment and sincerity in resolving the grave issues affecting the hills of Manipur.
