New Delhi, May 2: Former Minister for Forest and Environment and General Administration, A.S. Arthur, passed away at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi on Saturday at around 4:40 AM. He was 99.

A distinguished public figure, Arthur had taken voluntary retirement as Special Secretary of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1984 to enter active politics in Manipur. In the same year, he was elected as Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the 44-Ukhrul Assembly Constituency, serving from 1984 to 1989.
During his political career, he held the portfolio of Minister for Forest and Environment and General Administration from 1994 to 1997, contributing significantly to governance and administrative affairs in the state.
Late A.S. Arthur hailed from Shangshak Phunghon village in Ukhrul district. He is survived by his family, including his son, Alfred Kan-Ngam Arthur, the current Member of Parliament representing the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency.
Condolences have begun pouring in from leaders and well-wishers, remembering him as a dedicated leader who served the people with commitment and integrity.
