Ukhrul, July 5: Three bodybuilders from Ukhrul district have been selected for sponsorship by the 10th Sector Assam Rifles, Somsai, under its community development initiative through sports.
The selected athletes are Mr. Mishap Khapai of Kazipphung, Mr. Worthan Lunglo of Lambui, and Mr. M. Pihimas of Phungreitang West. They will represent Ukhrul district in the upcoming Mr. NE India Championship, scheduled to be held in Nagaland on September 10 and 11.
The sponsorship programme was held on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 10:15 am at Somsai, Ukhrul. As part of the support, the sponsored athletes were provided with nutritional diet packages to help them prepare for the championship.
According to the organisers, the main objective of the programme is to encourage youths to discover and develop their hidden potential through sports while staying away from drugs and other harmful activities. During the interaction programme, Assam Rifles officials encouraged the athletes to work for the welfare of society and contribute to community upliftment through sports, peace, development, education and nation building.
The officials also assured that Assam Rifles would continue to extend support in the days to come to deserving individuals in different fields.
Speaking on the occasion, the coach of the athletes expressed deep appreciation to Assam Rifles for the initiative. He said that in his nearly two decades of coaching experience, he had never come across such provisions and facilities being extended to local athletes.
He further stated that the nutritional support provided to the sponsored athletes was beyond expectations and would greatly help them in their preparation for the upcoming championship.
The initiative has been welcomed as a positive step towards promoting sports culture among the youth of Ukhrul district and encouraging talented athletes to pursue excellence at regional and national platforms.
