Imphal/Kangpokpi, May 25: Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki tribes, along with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Kangpokpi district, has unanimously resolved to extend the ongoing total shutdown across all Kuki-Zo inhabited areas of Manipur with effect from 12 midnight of May 25, 2026.
In a press statement issued from the KIM Secretariat on Monday, Kuki Inpi Manipur stated that the decision was taken during a Joint Council Meeting held between KIM and various Kuki-Zo Civil Society Organisations in response to what it described as the continued “silence, indifference and inaction” of the Government despite 12 consecutive days of public shutdown, democratic protests and appeals for justice.
The organisation alleged that the prolonged agitation followed the killing of three Kuki-Zo church leaders and the continued detention of Kuki-Zo individuals, whom it claimed were being held hostage by Naga civil society organisations allegedly led by the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA).
According to the statement, the Joint Council resolved that the total shutdown would continue indefinitely and would only be lifted after the perpetrators involved in the killing of the three church leaders are thoroughly investigated, identified and brought to justice. The body also demanded the safe, immediate and unconditional release of all Kuki-Zo individuals allegedly under illegal detention.
Kuki Inpi Manipur further criticised the Government for what it termed a failure to meaningfully address the concerns and appeals of the people, describing the situation as a “serious affront” to the collective suffering and dignity of the Kuki-Zo community.
The meeting also reportedly resolved to intensify the ongoing democratic movement seeking justice. The statement warned that more stringent measures may be adopted in consultation with the public if the Government continues to remain indifferent to the demands and aspirations of the Kuki-Zo people.
However, KIM clarified that essential and emergency services, including medical emergencies, healthcare services, media operations and security-related movements, would remain exempted from the shutdown.
Appealing for continued solidarity, Kuki Inpi Manipur urged the public to extend cooperation and support to what it termed a collective struggle for justice, truth, peace and the protection of human dignity.
The statement was issued by Janghaolun Haokip, Secretary, Information & Publicity, Kuki Inpi Manipur.
