Ukhrul/Kamjong, July 1, 2026: The Eastern Command of the Naga Village Guard (NVG) has strongly condemned the reported attack on two Tangkhul Naga settlements, Huimin Thana and Kherongram, a hamlet of Nampisha village, along the Indo-Myanmar border on Wednesday, July 1.
In a press release issued by its Media Cell, the NVG alleged that Kuki militants, in collusion with the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B), carried out a planned and targeted offensive against the two Naga settlements. The organisation claimed that the incident was preceded by the deliberate burning of abandoned houses at Phaimol, a Kuki village under Kamjong Sub-Division, allegedly to create a pretext for the attack on the Naga villages.
According to the NVG, around 20 armed persons crossed the Namya River from Phaikoh village, located near Border Pillar 102, and launched a violent attack on Huimin Thana and Kherongram. The release stated that the local residents managed to escape from the area, preventing loss of life, but several houses and temporary shelters were destroyed in the attack.
The NVG stated that 13 dwelling houses at Kherongram and seven houses at Huimin Thana were burnt to ashes. It further said that around 20 camps set up at Kherongram in 2023, which were reportedly sheltering 365 Burmese refugees following the political unrest in Myanmar, were also completely razed to the ground.
The press release further claimed that the attack on the two Naga settlements took place minutes after around 20 abandoned houses at Phaimol village were allegedly set on fire at about 1:30 PM on the same day. The NVG described the incident as a “premeditated” act and alleged that the burning of Phaimol was orchestrated as part of a larger plan to justify the attack on Tangkhul Naga settlements.
Drawing a comparison with earlier incidents, the NVG stated that the July 1 incident resembled the burning of Lanchah village prior to the cross-border attacks on Tangkhul Naga villages, including Z Choro, Wanglee and Namlee, in Kamjong on May 7, 2026.
Expressing serious concern, the NVG said the reported armed aggression occurred despite the presence of security forces in the area. The organisation stated that Assam Rifles, Border Security Forces, Indian Reserve Battalion and Police personnel were stationed at Kherongram, which is located adjacent to Huimin Thana village.
The Eastern Command of the NVG called upon Tangkhul Naga villagers residing along the international border to remain on high alert and maintain vigilance. It alleged that repeated acts of aggression against Naga settlements were aimed at asserting territorial domination in the hill areas of Manipur.
The NVG also reiterated its commitment to protect Naga land, identity and people. Strongly condemning the attack, the organisation warned that any further threat to the peace and existence of the people would be met with a firm response.
The latest incident has raised fresh concern over the security situation in villages located along the Indo-Myanmar border, particularly in areas where Naga settlements and refugee shelters remain vulnerable to cross-border tension and armed violence.
The NVG has urged the people in the border areas to remain united, alert and prepared, while calling attention to what it described as repeated threats against Tangkhul Naga villages in Kamjong district.
