Ukhrul, July 27: A major disruption to postal services has been reported after 36 mail bags belonging to the Ukhrul Postal Division were destroyed in a fire during an incident along the Yaingangpokpi–Litan stretch of National Highway-202 on Monday, resulting in the loss of parcels, ATM cards, passports and other important postal articles.
According to Wungreipam Rimai, Sub-Postmaster of Ukhrul Sub-Post Office, the incident occurred on July 27, 2026, while postal consignments were being transported between Yaingangpokpi and Litan. Several mail bags were reportedly set ablaze, completely destroying consignments destined for various post offices under the Ukhrul Postal Division.
The Department of Posts has lodged an FIR at Litan Police Station, and the matter has been reported to the concerned civil and police authorities for investigation. Postal officials said an assessment of the damage is underway while efforts are being made to restore services and assist customers affected by the loss of mail articles.
Preliminary findings indicate that 36 mail bags were destroyed in the incident, comprising 30 bags for Ukhrul, four for Somdal, one for Kamjong and Phungyar. The destroyed consignments reportedly contained sensitive and valuable postal articles, including ATM cards, passports, registered parcels and other official documents.
The incident has raised serious concerns over the disruption of essential postal and communication services across the district, with many customers likely to experience delays or permanent loss of important documents and deliveries.
The incident comes amid heightened tension along NH-202. In a separate press statement, the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) alleged a serious deterioration of law and order along the highway. According to the organisation, more than 40 vehicles travelling under security escort between Imphal and Ukhrul were intercepted at Shangkai Kuki village and Mahadev Hill by individuals allegedly enforcing what it described as a “Counter Economic Blockade.”
The TNL claimed that the convoy was stopped, vehicles were forcibly searched, and cash, official documents, clothing and essential groceries were looted. The organisation further alleged that some items were set on fire during the incident. It also questioned the effectiveness of the security forces deployed along the route and urged the Manipur Government to take immediate measures to ensure the safety of commuters and guarantee the free movement of essential goods on NH-202.
Meanwhile, the destruction of the postal consignment has triggered widespread concern on social media, with many users questioning the adequacy of security arrangements along the highway and calling for a thorough investigation into the incident and enhanced protection for essential public services.
