Imphal, May 1, 2026: Several civil society organisations in Tengnoupal District have called for a total shutdown across the district on Thursday, protesting the arrest of a local social leader.
In a joint press release issued on May 1, groups including the Kuki Chiefs’ Association, Molnoi Area Welfare Council, Hill Tribal Council, Kuki Students’ Organisation, and Kuki Women Union & Human Rights announced a district-wide shutdown from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The protest is against what they termed the “arbitrary arrest” of Mr. Otkhothang Baite on April 30.

According to the statement, Baite is a former chairman of Canan Veng, HTC Unit-XI, described by the organisations as a “dedicated and honest social leader.” It further noted that he had retired due to hearing impairment and was the sole breadwinner of his family.
The organisations strongly criticised the police action, alleging that the arrest was unjustified and based on FIRs filed by Meitei police officers. They claimed that Kuki-Zo leaders are being selectively targeted while “war mongers” are allowed to operate freely in the state.
Calling for immediate intervention, the groups appealed to central authorities and investigative agencies to ensure that justice is delivered impartially and not along communal lines.
The statement concluded with a call for unity and justice, urging authorities to maintain balance and fairness in law enforcement.
“Let justice prevail,” the release stated.
