Ukhrul/Kamjong, May 27: The Laho Litan Village Authority under Phungyar Block, Kamjong District, has strongly condemned an alleged unprovoked armed attack on Tangkhul Naga villages, claiming that civilian lives and security were gravely threatened following sustained gunfire on May 26.
In a press release issued on May 27, the village authority stated that the villages of Leingangching (Laho), Litan and Sharkaphung came under what it described as a “sustained assault” by automatic and sophisticated weapons at approximately 10:22 PM on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
According to the statement, the attack allegedly originated from the direction of Mongkot Chepu Kuki village, which the authority termed as a direct threat to civilian safety, peace, and law and order in the region.
The village authority alleged that the incident triggered panic and trauma among residents, particularly women, children, and the elderly, while claiming that the prevailing security situation in the affected areas remains volatile and deeply concerning.
Raising serious allegations against security personnel, the authority further claimed that instead of neutralising the alleged source of aggression, certain elements of the security forces reportedly discharged live ammunition towards Naga civilians who were defending their homes, with rounds allegedly fired within village boundaries.
The press statement described such actions as unacceptable and accused those involved of violating constitutional safeguards, established rules of engagement, and humanitarian norms. It further stated that such incidents could undermine public confidence in institutions tasked with maintaining peace and protecting civilians.
Key Demands Raised
The Laho Litan Village Authority placed four major demands before the Government:
- Immediate cessation of hostilities in and around civilian-populated areas by all armed actors.
- Independent judicial inquiry into the May 26 incident, including an investigation into both the initial attack and the alleged conduct of security personnel, with findings to be made public.
- Deployment of neutral peacekeeping intervention, including adequately resourced security arrangements to protect civilians in Leingangching, Litan, and Sharkaphung villages, stating that the current arrangement had failed to ensure public safety.
- Legal accountability and prosecution of any individuals, including state security personnel, found responsible for unlawful firing upon civilians or within village areas.
The authority reiterated that the sanctity of civilian life must not be compromised and stressed that both the State and Central governments bear the responsibility of maintaining law and order without bias.
Calling for urgent intervention, the village authority appealed to the Government of Manipur, the Union Government, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and other concerned human rights bodies to step in and ensure justice, protection, and accountability.
The statement was issued by the Media Cell of Leingangching/Laho Litan Village.
