New Delhi, May 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased India’s rich tribal heritage and traditional craftsmanship by presenting specially curated indigenous gifts to several world leaders during his recent diplomatic engagements,

according to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. The diplomatic gifts highlighted the cultural diversity, traditional artistry and tribal legacy of different regions of India, while also promoting indigenous craftsmanship on the global stage. Among the notable gifts, Prime Minister Modi presented a traditional Gond painting from Madhya Pradesh to Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. The renowned tribal art form, created by the Gond community, is recognised for its intricate dot-and-line patterns and vibrant natural colours. The artwork reflects the deep connection between tribal communities and nature and continues to provide livelihood opportunities to tribal artisans.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was gifted a Muga Silk stole from Assam along with a Shirui Lily stole, crafted by the Tangkhul Naga community of Manipur. Muga silk, known for its distinctive golden sheen, is a Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged textile tradition preserved by tribal weaving communities for generations.

The Shirui Lily stole, inspired by Manipur’s rare state flower — the Shirui Lily found in Ukhrul district — symbolises the unique cultural identity and artistic heritage of the Tangkhul Naga tribe. The inclusion of the stole in a diplomatic exchange has been viewed as a recognition of Manipur’s indigenous craftsmanship at the international level.
Meanwhile, Her Majesty the Queen Mother of the UAE received Black Rice (Chak-Hao) from Manipur, a traditional heritage grain cultivated by tribal hill communities and widely appreciated for its nutritional and medicinal value.

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs stated that through these thoughtfully selected gifts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought to highlight India’s tribal traditions, craftsmanship and cultural heritage before the international community, reinforcing the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge and supporting tribal livelihoods. The initiative also underscores the growing recognition of tribal products and handloom traditions from regions such as Manipur, Assam and Madhya Pradesh on the global platform.
