Senapati, May 29: The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Government of Manipur, demanding immediate action to establish the whereabouts and secure the release of six Liangmai Naga hostages allegedly abducted by Kuki militants operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.
In a press communiqué issued on May 29, 2026, ANSAM stated that an emergency Presidential Council meeting, attended by former leaders of the association, was convened on May 24 to deliberate on the prevailing crisis in Manipur and the abduction of 18 Liangmai Naga civilians, including minors and pastors, from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13, 2026, reportedly in broad daylight near the Leimakhong-based 57 Mountain Division of the Indian Army.
Following extensive deliberations, the house reportedly expressed serious concern over what it described as the failure of the State Government to take decisive action regarding the six remaining Liangmai Naga hostages, despite repeated appeals, demonstrations, and media briefings by Naga civil society organisations.
ANSAM stated that the association has unanimously resolved to give the Government of Manipur four days from May 29 to disclose the condition and status of the abducted individuals and ensure their safe handover to the Naga people. The organisation warned that failure to meet the deadline may compel the Naga community to collectively boycott the present State Government and appeal to Naga legislators supporting the government to withdraw their support in the interest of Naga security and welfare.
The association also questioned the appointment of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, alleging conflict of interest due to her marital association with a chairman of a Kuki militant group under SoO. It further criticised the State Government and Home Department for what it termed an inadequate response to incidents involving violence and insecurity in Naga-inhabited areas.
In its statement, ANSAM also raised concerns over recent violent incidents, including the Joujangtek ambush, the killing of Naga civilians in TM Kasom, and attacks on church leaders, while reiterating allegations of militant activities along the Indo-Myanmar border in Kamjong district.
Among its key demands, ANSAM called for:
- Immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved in attacks and killings of Naga civilians.
- Abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups, alleging misuse of the arrangement.
- Removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen from office.
The association appealed to both the State and Central Governments to intervene urgently and prevent further escalation of the situation, while stressing the need to restore peace and security in the region.
The communiqué was jointly signed by ANSAM President Th. Angteshang Maring and General Secretary Isaac Charenmei.
