Ukhrul, May 30, 2026: The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has strongly condemned the reported digging and damage of National Highway-202 (NH-202) at Shangkai village under Litan Police Station in Ukhrul district, alleging that the act was carried out by individuals linked to Kuki groups and cadres operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.
In a press communiqué issued on Saturday, TNL stated that the damage to the highway came to light on May 30 and described the act as a serious attack on public infrastructure. The organisation expressed concern over the prolonged disruption of the highway, which has reportedly remained under indefinite blockade since May 13, 2026, due to actions by Kuki civil society organisations.
The Working Committee said it holds the Shangkai village chief and the Village Authority Council accountable for the damages caused to the national highway and urged the State Government not to remain a “mute spectator.” It called upon the authorities to immediately initiate legal action, arrest those responsible, and ensure that the matter is brought before a court of law.
The TNL further raised concerns regarding alleged environmental degradation in the hill areas, claiming that large tracts of forest land have been adversely affected by poppy cultivation and the excessive use of chemicals and fertilisers. The organisation also reiterated allegations of involvement of certain armed elements in cross-border illegal activities and urged the Government of India to take the matter seriously.
Calling for stronger intervention, TNL appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs to review the role of SoO cadres in Manipur and urged the Centre to reconsider the existing Suspension of Operations agreement, citing concerns over law and order and public safety in the state.
