Imphal, June 6: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has called for a gradual reduction in the use of chemical fertilizers and greater adoption of organic farming practices while inaugurating the State Krishi Mela 2026 at the City Convention Centre, Imphal.
The event, organized under the theme “Balanced Use of Fertilizer,” brought together farmers, scientists, agricultural experts, entrepreneurs, and government officials to discuss sustainable agricultural development and soil health. Upon arriving at the venue, the Chief Minister inspected various stalls showcasing agricultural and horticultural products.
Addressing the gathering, Khemchand Singh emphasized that excessive dependence on chemical fertilizers poses long-term risks to human health and environmental sustainability. He stated that while the complete elimination of chemical fertilizers may not be immediately feasible, efforts must be made to progressively reduce their use and encourage organic alternatives.
Referring to Sikkim’s success as India’s first fully organic farming state, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of cooperation between government agencies and farming communities. He informed the gathering that approximately 400 hectares of agricultural land have been identified for exclusive organic cultivation in Manipur.
The Chief Minister also encouraged farmers to adopt double-cropping and triple-cropping techniques to enhance agricultural productivity and income generation. He assured farmers that the government would closely monitor the distribution of urea and intervene wherever necessary to address irregularities.
The programme witnessed the launch of the Manipur Seed and Organic Certification Agency (MASOCA), aimed at strengthening seed certification and promoting organic agriculture. A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between the Department of Agriculture and Central Agricultural University for Natural Farming Certification.
During the event, agricultural machinery worth Rs. 4.32 crore was distributed to 189 beneficiaries under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM). The machinery included tractors, mini rice mills, power tillers, rotavators, solar dryers, seeders, balers, weeders, and other equipment intended to improve agricultural productivity.
The Chief Minister also released a publication titled “Farmers’ Success Stories,” documenting the experiences of 53 successful farmers from across Manipur. State-Level Best Farmers Awards and ATMA District Awards were presented to recognize outstanding contributions in the agricultural sector. Imphal East district secured first place in the ATMA Awards, while Imphal West received second place and Chandel and Churachandpur jointly secured third place.
The event was attended by several legislators, officials of the Agriculture Department, scientists, entrepreneurs, and farmers from different parts of the state.
